Concordia University Irvine senior
Connor Gordon continued his assault on the school record book and scored three times while
Willy Ospina and Eli Amadin each contributed a score of their own Thursday to help the Eagles capture a 5-2 victory over Dominican.
The Eagles improved to 4-1 in their last five matches and 8-9 overall. The Green and Gold are also now 6-4 in the PacWest conference heading into their regular season finale this Saturday at home against Holy Names.
Concordia's
Willy Ospina opened the scoring with a goal in the first half off a feed by senior
Jose Garfias. Â The Eagles led 1-0 at intermission but then the game opened up. The two teams combined for six goals in the second half with Gordon tallying all three of his scores in the final 45 minutes.
Gordon's first goal came off a touch from sophomore
Michael Oakson. The Eagles were awarded a free kick and Gordon was able to cash in to make it 2-0 Eagles in the 59th minute.
Dominican's leading scorer Wilson Briggs notched his 14th goal of the year on an unassisted attempt to cut the lead in half less than two minutes later. But Concordia's offense kept coming.
Elijah Amadin scored off a rebound in the 69th minute to push the lead back to 3-1 in favor of the Eagles. Both teams kept pushing the pace and Concordia in particular kept racking up the shot attempts.
Gordon found the back of the net again after he was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute. He capped off a brilliant afternoon with his third goal of the day after Ospina sent the ball into the box and Gordon caught the keeper off guard.
Tanner Herrero added a goal for the visitors on a penalty kick to cap the scoring in the final minute of regulation.
Concordia outshot the Penguins 32 to seven and put 18 shots on goal.
Gordon's hat trick gave him 48 career goals and moved him within just two goals of tying Jeff Clark for most goals in Concordia men's soccer history.
Gordon will get his shot to tie or break Clark's record on Senior Day this Saturday when Holy Names University visits Eagles Field. The men's game is slated to start at 10:30 a.m. followed by the women's regular season finale. Â
