SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Concordia women's volleyball team went on the road to face Point Loma, another top team in the PacWest on Saturday evening. The Sea Lions offense was strong, with four players with nine or more kills, earning them a 3-1 victory, 25-21, 25-22, 21-15, 25-23.
Setters
Ailsa Watson and
Brianna Latigue spread the wealth evenly for their hitters like their opponent, dishing out 21 and 16 assists respectively. Concordia had five players with six or more kills, led by outside hitter
Jaclyn Brown with 11.
Hannah Tostado defended the net well for the second night in a row, putting up seven blocks.
The match started out even with no team getting ahead by one, until
Cambria Fernandez and
Jaclyn Brown put down consecutive kills to get ahead 10-8. Point Loma's Jaime Cymbaluk would go on a tear to take the lead at 14-11. With the Sea Lions up 22-17, a trio of their hitting errors and a
Clarice Buchanan ace brought Concordia within one. But the momentum shifted toward the home team, taking the final three points.
Renae Ross and Fernandez each contributed points for the Eagles to take an early 5-3 lead in set two. Concordia trailed 16-10, but Ross terminated a Watson set and Rilley Gill served an ace to cut the lead. Kills from
Kylie Breitenwischer, Gill, and Latigue tied the set at 20-20. Breitenwischer delivered again but PLNU would complete the set with a 3-1 run.
Despite being down 6-3 in the third set, Concordia turned it around to take an 8-3 lead. Point Loma would eventually take back the lead, until the Eagles took advantage of 10 Sea Lion errors to bounce back ahead 22-18 from the 12-3 run. Latigue and Ross completed the set each with kills to extend the match.
Brown helped Concordia in the fourth, serving up back-to-back aces to cut a Point Loma lead to three, 10-7. She would then collect a kill that sparked a 6-1 run off that contained three PLNU hitting error and two Gill kills to tie the set at 18-18. The Eagles were unable to get ahead, although they were able to stay close behind. The Sea Lions were perched at match point with Tostado saving one with an Eagle error closing out the game.
Concordia heads back on the road next week taking on Notre Dame de Namur on November 2
nd at 7 p.m. and follows at Dominican the next day at 3 p.m.
