Sonoma, Calif. - The Eagles started their weekend in style by shooting a scorching percentage from the field and taking care of business with an 84-68 win Friday evening over Sonoma State.
Senior
Brian Chambers led a balanced attack for the Eagles with 17 points.Â
Kayle Knuckles and
Robert Taylor each scored 13 and
Jamel White added 11 for the Green and Gold, who never trailed in the contest. The Eagles shot a blistering 50.8 percent from the floor and sank 12 of their 22 three-point attempts (54.5 percent).Â
Treys by Knuckles and
Austin Clarke keyed a 9-2 run in the early going as the Eagles opened up a 14-7 lead out the gate. A few minutes later, Chambers and
Tyler Lacour nailed back-to-back threes to stretch Concordia's lead to 25-17 midway through the first half.
The Seawolves rallied to tie the contest at 31 but
Cameron English quickly scored six of his eight points to help Concordia regain control. Taylor then converted two layups and a pair of free throws to put the Eagles up by five. The two teams went to the locker room with the Eagles holding a slim 41-36 lead.Â
In the second half, the Eagles continued their offensive assault. A dunk by Taylor and a pair of layups by
Denzel Holt helped spark an 11-2 run that expanded the Eagles lead to 55-44. Chambers and Lacour again hit back-to-back threes and another dunk by Taylor made it 68-50 to effectively put this one out of reach.
The Eagles have shown they can build big leads in other games already this season but this was the first time they prevented their opponent from making a comeback and cemented a convincing win by double digits.Â
"We've had some really hard lessons the first two weeks which helped us tonight against a very good Sonoma team," said Concordia head coach
Ken Ammann. "It was a battle all night long and our guys responded much better when things got difficult."
"We moved the ball better which led to better shots and resulted in us shooting a higher percentage," added Ammann. "We kept defending when the game got tight."
The Eagles will look to make it two wins in a row when they face San Francisco State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second day at the Ron Logsdon Classic.
