LA JOLLA, Calif. — Eagles Baseball (2-3, 0-0 PWC) headed to Triton Ballpark on Friday afternoon for its first away game of the season. Kicking off a weekend of tough competition, Concordia found rhythm in the bullpen and strength in its offense to triumph 6-4 over No. 4 Colorado Mesa (1-1, 0-0 RMAC).
Colorado Mesa was picked to repeat as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) favorite garnering all eight first place votes. In 2017, the Mavericks won their sixth straight regular season championship, fourth straight tournament title and finished the season in the semifinals at the NCAA Division II College World Series.
For Concordia, freshman LHP Will Cohen proved to be a powerhouse on the mound, allowing five hits and only one run in four innings pitched. Cohen received the win while sophomore RHP Carpenter Pagett received the save, striking out three batters in the top of the ninth to secure the win. Haloa Dudoit led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Nick Grimes went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Eagles offense recorded six total runs from seven total hits.
Scoring Summary
The Eagles offensive charge started in the bottom of the first inning with Dillon Millar, who drew a walk. Back to back singles by Dudoit and Davis Tominaga loaded the bases with no outs. Hunter Holland was hit by the pitch to advance the runners and score Millar. Bailey Collins was walked and Dudoit crossed the plate. Then, Grimes singled to center field to bring Tominaga in and Concordia led 3-0 at the end of the first.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tyler Barry singled to left field and later scored on a throwing error by Colorado Mesa. Dominic Castro reached on a fielders choice and was knocked in by a sacrifice fly to left field by Dudoit.
Grimes reached first base in the fifth inning on a fielders choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tony Garcia III hit an RBI double down the right field line to score Grimes.
After eight and a half innings, Concordia defeated No. 4 Colorado Mesa 6-4.
