Roach shatters PacWest record, Eagles down Chaminade

IRVINE, Calif. — Saturday in CU Arena, Concordia gave Chaminade déjà vu from their meeting in November, where Concordia defeated the Silverswords 80-75. In that game, Brian Chambers posted a career high 38 points to lead the Eagles to victory. The second time around, Chaminade was struck by senior JT Roach.

Roach not only rattled off 40 points, he made 12 three-pointers and shattered the PacWest Conference and Concordia Men's Basketball individual game record. The previous record was 10. His 40 were also enough to put him in a tie for third in most points scored in a single game and a tie for sixth in three-point percentage (.667).

The first half kicked off with a Chambers' three-pointer from outside, assisted by Tad Dufelmeier. The Eagles took the lead in the second minute and didn't look back. Roach's captivating play caught early. In the first half alone, he tallied 21 points, all coming from seven deep shots on the assists from Dufelmeier (3) and Michael Vos-Otin (2). The teams headed to halftime with a 34-27 Eagle lead.

Not one minute into the second half, Roach hit his eighth three-pointer of the contest after a defensive rebound by Chambers and then his ninth just three minutes later. Mike Mellinger set Roach up for his 10th with a steal, before Vos-Otin dished off the pass for the tying shot. With 4:05 to go, Vos-Otin fed another pass to Roach for the record breaking basket. The final three-pointer came with 2:22 to go on the pass from Dufelmeier. When the buzzer sounded, the crowd not only cheered for the Eagle victory, but the performance Roach gave, with 36 of his 40 points coming from behind the arc.

Chambers recorded 12 points and four rebounds. Tad Dufelmeier added 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds while Geoff Gerlach posted 10 points and six rebounds.

Concordia, now 15-9 and 9-7 in the PacWest conference, looks to make it five-straight home wins Monday against Hawaii Hilo. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
