AZUSA, Calif. — In a double-header PacWest matchup against No. 1 regionally ranked Azusa Pacific (13-0, 3-0 PWC) on Friday, the Eagles fell 10-1 and 5-3 moving their PacWest record to 0-3. Bailey Collins and Davis Tominaga's homers in game two were not enough against the offensive strength of APU.
Azusa Pacific was picked to finish second in the PacWest preseason poll just behind favorite, Cal Baptist. The Cougars won their first PacWest title last year with the help of a pitching staff that recorded 10 shutouts and a 2.93 ERA on the season.
Game One - Cougars 10, Eagles 1: Concordia Baseball knocked five hits and one run in the second game of the four game series against APU. Freshman RHP Joshua Ibarra (0-2) started on the mound and received the loss for Concordia's bullpen. Collins went 2-for-2 with a single down the right field line and a single to right field. Chris Martin, Haloa Dudoit, and Dillon Millar knocked a hit a piece. In the top of the seventh inning, Dominic Castro walked to first. Castro stood on third after an error and a wild pitch and was hit into home on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Millar. The leadoff batter hit the Eagles only RBI in game one.
Game Two - Cougars 5, Eagles 3: CUI picked up offensive momentum recording eight hits and three runs. The Eagles were the first to get on the board with a run in the third inning. Juan Zuniga singled up the middle and was moved by a sac bunt and a walk. Dudoit grounded out to first base but scored Zuniga for the first Eagle RBI of game two. Hunter Holland went 2-for-3 with two knocks to right field. Collins and Tominaga had a solo home run each, both launching one over the right field fence but the Cougars offense proved relentless, overtaking Concordia 5-3.
Up Next: Eagles Baseball (3-10, 0-3) closes out its PacWest opening series at Azusa with a game four. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m on Saturday Feb. 24.
