Michaela Vanderklugt has posted double-digits 16 times this season, cleared 20-points twice - and Saturday, she smashed her career record by nine points against Holy Names. Vanderklugt's 32 points pushed the Eagles past the Holy Names Hawks for the 89-63 PacWest win.
Eagle Eye: Vanderklugt was 13-19 from the field with two of three-pointers, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Montana Walters dished out six assists with 13 points and a steal. Freshman
Reilly Walsh also had six assists, seven points and four rebounds.
Kennedy Fulcher shot 5-5 from the field with 11 points and
Portia Neale posted 10 points and six rebounds.
First half face off: The close contest in the first quarter resulted in a 16-16 tie after Holy Names hit a three-pointer with under a minute to play.
Sopavy Seng scored five of the Eagles' first quarter points. With under two minutes to play in the second, the Hawks held a four-point lead, until Walters sunk a deep shot to cut it down to one. Following a defensive rebound from Seng, Vanderklugt made a layup to put CUI up by one. Alexandra Candelario made 2-2 free throws for the Hawks to send them to the half with a 40-39 lead.
A strong second half: Concordia steadily separated themselves in the third on buckets from Neale, Vanderklugt, Walters and Fulcher. The largest lead of the quarter,12, came on free throws from Vanderklugt. In the final period, a 13-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Neale and Vanderklugt, secured the win for Concordia.
Kara Ito posted the Eagles' final two-points on a layup. Vanderklugt tallied 18 points in the second half and Neale added her 10 in the final two quarters.
What's Next: Wednesday, Concordia (11-9, 8-6 PWC) hosts Notre Dame de Namur at 5:30 p.m. in CU Arena.
