The Eagles posted 22 runs in a pair of games to claim not only two wins, but two shut outs. On the opening night of the Dixie State Tournament, Concordia shut out the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Metro State to improve its record to 6-1.
Game 1: CUI 15, Colorado Springs 0: Kailey Palazzolo put the Eagles on the board early with a homer to bring home
Ryann Ferguson who reached on a single to left field. In the second,
Amy Eilefson opened up the inning with a double to right field on an 0-0 count and
McKinsey Thorpe sent one over the fence for the 4-0 lead.
Heather Nonora kept the inning alive with a double and Ferguson singled through the right side to increase the lead to five. In the fourth, Concordia posted six hits to score five runs. The following inning,
Stephanie Ruelas and
Rebecca Borstmayer hit back-to-back singles to set the Eagles up.
Kaylee Dalgarn and Eilefson added RBI doubles for three more runs. With the bases loaded and no outs,
Brooke Jackson grounded out to the second baseman, but knocked in a Eilefson.
Myka Hughes stepped up next and brought the final Eagle run around and increased the lead to 15. Pitcher
Grayson Harvey closed out the game with a strikeout in the bottom of the fifth.
Eagle Eye: Harvey tossed five innings for the shutout and her second win of the year, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts. Ferguson was 3-4 with two RBI, one run and two stolen bases. Eilefson was 4-4 with three runs and four RBI. As a team, Concordia posted 20 hits, and saw multi hit performances from six Eagles.
Game 2: CUI 7, Metro State 0: The second shutout of the day was led by pitcher
Callie Nunes, who struck out 14 Roadrunners across six frames for the win. Eilefson stayed hot at the plate and hit a home run in the first for the 1-0 Eagle lead. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles utilized three hits to add four runs. The Eagles made it seven in fifth inning when Thorpe notched her second home run of the day for two more RBI.
Jordan Quinn entered the game in the top of the seventh and forced three straight outs to seal the 7-0 victory.
Eagle Eye: Thorpe led the team with three hits and four RBI and
Lauren Lopez had two hits and scored one run. Nunes is now 2-0 o the year.
What's Next: Saturday, the Eagles take on Colorado Mesa University at 12:30 p.m. and Colorado School of Mines at 3 p.m.
