Concordia Softball Wins Two More Thrilling Games in Hawaii

The Eagles finished up their long Hawaii trip with two games against the University of Hawaii at Hilo.  Each game was decided by just one run and ended with the Eagles on top.  Concordia finished their road trip with a 7-1 record, victorious in the last four.

GAME ONE: The Eagles continued their winning ways on Saturday in the opening game.  With Callie Nunes on the mound for the Eagles, and Cyanne Hernandez, sporting an 11-0 record, on the mound for the Vulcans, runs were at a premium.
The Eagles got on the board first in the 2nd inning.  After Sarah Kretschmar led off the inning with a triple, CUI executed the squeeze play, with Mackenzie Graham dropping down the bunt and Kretschmar beating out the throw to the plate.
UHH came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the 2nd on a Brinell Kaleikini home run.
With the score tied at one with two outs in the top of the 5th, Amy Eilefson hit a long shot to left center field that cleared the fence.  The home run gave the Eagles the lead again, and it was all Nunes needed.  She gave up just two more hits, allowing no runs and finishing off the Vulcans.  The loss was the first of the season for Cyanne Fernandez.

Statistical Leaders: Ryann Ferguson finished two-for-four, Kretschmar finished two-for-three, Nunes struck out ten and collected her seventh win of the season.

GAME TWO: The Eagles capped things off with one final game against UHH, and it was the game of the year so far.
After falling behind 6-0 through four innings, it would have been easy for the Eagles to just head home and be happy with a winning record on the trip.
In the 5th inning, however, they began their comeback.  After loading the bases, McKinsey Thorpe and Ferguson each knocked in runners and the Eagles got on the board.
Entering the 7th, the odds were still long for the visitors, but they rallied.  Ashley Balestreri led off with an infield single and Heather Nonora followed up with a single of her own.  Thorpe was then hit by a pitch before Cyanne Fernandez came in out of the bullpen for the Vulcans.  The rally continued.  Ferguson knocked in Balestreri to bring the score to 6-3.
After the next two hitters were retired, Concordia was down to their final out.  With the bases still loaded, Amanda Gjertsen knocked in two with a double to left field.  Kretschmar was then hit by a pitch to re-load the bases and then Mackenzie Graham drew an RBI walk.  The Eagles came all the way back and sent the game to extras.
In the top of the 8th, the Eagles were at it again, with Thorpe singling and Kailey Palazzolo knocking her in on a long double to center.  Now leading 7-6, Callie Nunes came out of the bullpen and closed it out in the bottom of the 8th.

Statistical Leaders: Thorpe finished two-for-four with two runs scored, Ferguson finished two-for-five and knocked in a pair, Gjertsen finished two-for-four with two RBI's, and Nunes collected her fourth save of the season.

What's Next: The Eagles return home on Saturday, March 17 as they take on the Academy of Art at 12 PM at Eagles Field.
