The Concordia softball team finally made their home debut on Saturday, taking on the Academy of Art Urban Knights in a doubleheader. After playing 19 games on the road to start the season, the Eagles looked to continue their winning ways at Eagles Field.
GAME ONE: In the first game of the doubleheader, the Eagles replicated the formula that has led to their recent hot play, winners of seven of their last eight games. The bats came out hot and
Callie Nunes was dominant on the mound.
In the 1
st inning,
Kailey Palazzolo cleared the centerfield wall to put the Eagles up 2-0. The Eagles would add three more in the 2
nd, as Palazzolo again came through for the Eagles. Her bases loaded single ran the score up to 5-0.
Ashley Balestreri knocked in another run in the 3
rd and the Eagles tacked on an unearned run in the 5
th.
With a 7-0 lead, the Eagles cruised to victory behind Nunes. In five innings, she struck out 10, giving up only one hit, a bunt single in the 3
rd. After five innings, Nunes was replaced by
Jordan Quinn, who recorded the final six outs, giving up only one hit and no runs. The Eagles won game one 7-1.
Statistical Leaders: Nunes earned her eighth win of the season. Palazzolo finished three-for-four at the plate. Balestreri and
McKinsey Thorpe each scored two runs.
GAME TWO: Looking for another sweep, the Eagles' bats went cold in game two. In the 1
st inning, CUI jumped out to a lead on a Palazzolo single to right that plated Thorpe, but that's all they would score for the game.
In the 4
th inning, AAU tied the score on a solo home run by Jayda Alaan, and five batters later, Gracie Sotomayer knocked in the go-ahead run for the Urban Knights. AAU would tack on another run in the 5
th and CUI was never able to respond. The final score was 3-1 AAU.
Statistical Leaders: Thorpe reached base in all four of her at bats, finishing one-for-one with three walks. Balestreri finished two-for-three at the plate.
What's Next: Concordia is back on the road next week, taking on Central Washington University in the Tournament of Champions. The tournament begins on March 23 in Turlock, California.
