The Concordia Eagles are in Turlock this weekend, participating in the 17
th annual Tournament of Champions, a three day event featuring teams from California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Hawaii. On Friday, CUI was pit against Central Washington and San Francisco State. Both games would be low scoring, with starting pitchers dominating and each game coming down to the wire.
GAME ONE: In the Eagles' opening game of the tournament,
Callie Nunes was on the mound facing a strong Central Washington lineup. The Wildcats entered the game at 14-4 and were riding a 10 game winning streak. While the weather in Turlock was chilly at first pitch, a brisk 51 degrees, Nunes was on fire.
Inning after inning, she shut down the Wildcats, fanning 13 and giving up just one hit. The Eagles' bats were quiet as well, and entering the bottom of the 6
th inning, the score remained tied 0-0.
In the 6
th, the Eagles broke free. After an infield single by
Heather Nonora,
McKinsey Thorpe reached on an error. With two on,
Ryann Ferguson took a 3-1 pitch and smacked a double to right center to plate both runners.
The two run lead was all Nunes needed. After giving up a leadoff walk to start the top of the 7
th, Nunes retired the next three batters, striking out a pair to give the Eagles the 2-0 victory.
Eagle Eye: Nunes earned her 10
th win, throwing her 2
nd shutout of her freshman campaign. Nonora finished one-for-two at the plate and scored a run. Ferguson collected two RBI's.
GAME TWO: In the second game of the day for the Eagles,
Grayson Harvey was on the mound and she pitched well, though luck was not on her side. In the bottom of the 1
st inning, the San Francisco State Gators got on the board first. After Michelle Castro was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, she then stole second and third and scored on an error to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. Harvey would settle in after the 1
st, however, and shut down SFSU for the next four innings.
In the top of the 1
st, the Eagles answered the run by the Gators with a run of their own.
Kailey Palazzolo led off the inning with a walk and would eventually score on a
Sarah Kretschmar single to left.
The score remained tied at one until the bottom of the 6
th inning. The Gators then scored the go-ahead run on an infield single, walk, sacrifice fly and an error. The Eagles rallied in the top of the 7
th, with runners reaching second and third with two outs, but they weren't able to get the key hit and fell by the score of 2-1.
Eagle Eye: Harvey pitched six strong, giving up just two runs, one earned, and striking out four. Kretschmar finished two-for-two at the plate and knocked in one.
Amanda Gjertsen and
Brooke Jackson each finished one-for-two.
