In day two of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, the Eagles dropped a pair of close games. Facing two quality teams, the Eagles needed to perform at their best to come out on top and they almost did. It was a marathon day, with the first game heading to extra innings and the second game closing out the night for the tournament.
GAME ONE: Facing the no. 13 Sonoma State Seawolves in the first game of the day, the Eagles knew they had a challenge on their hands and
Callie Nunes was certainly up the task. The game was low scoring, just as both CUI games were yesterday. Nunes and SSU pitcher Brigid Ruiz dueled for eight pressure packed innings.
Nunes was again brilliant, striking out 10 and giving up just five hits. Ruiz matched her pitch for pitch. She gave up only three hits and didn't walk a single batter. Through seven innings, the game remained scoreless. In the top of the 8
th, the Eagles were again shut down. In the bottom half of the inning, luck was on the Seawolves' side. With extra inning rules placing a runner on second to begin the inning, it only took one hit and the Seawolves came out on top. Julie Davis was the one to deliver for SSU, singling to leftfield. The runner was held at third, but when the throw came in wild from the outfield, Jenn Amaral came home and scored the winning run in walkoff fashion.
Eagle Eye: Nunes pitched 7.1 innings, giving up just one unearned run.
Amy Eilefson,
Amanda Gjertsen and
Ashley Balestreri each finished one-for-two at the plate.
GAME TWO: In game two, the Eagles faced Stanislaus State and jumped out to a quick lead in the 1
st inning. After
McKinsey Thorpe led off the game with a walk and stole second,
Ryann Ferguson then reached on an error, advancing Thorpe to third, and Eilefson brought her home on a fielders choice.
The Warriors tied the game in the 3
rd inning when Karmyn Rivera stole home. In the 4
th, the Warriors jumped ahead on a solo homerun by Ruby Quiralte. Concordia came right back, however. In the 5
th, they plated two runs on four hits, including an RBI double by Gjertsen and an RBI bunt single by Jackson.
The lead didn't last. SSU scored two in the bottom of the 5
th inning to go ahead 4-3 and the score held.
Eagle Eye: Ferguson finished two-for-four at the plate and scored a run. Gjertsen finished one-for-three with an RBI.
What's Next: The Eagles finish up play in the Tournament of Champions on Sunday, taking on Humboldt State at 11:30 AM in Turlock.
