SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Davis Tominaga continued to be an offensive threat for Concordia Baseball in a doubleheader split with Point Loma on Thursday afternoon. The designated hitter came up big with a home run in both game one and two. The Eagles fell 3-1 in the first but redeemed themselves in the second with a 5-4 win. The Sea Lions (12-11, 8-6 PWC) were picked fourth in the PacWest preseason poll, five points ahead of Concordia.
Game One started as a pitcher's duel in the first few innings between Alex Zalasky and PLNU's Irvin. Zalasky was outlasted, but pitched 6.1 innings, struck out three, and allowed three earned runs from different innings to rob the Sea Lions of offensive momentum. The sophomore received the loss in game one.
Tominaga hit a solo shot over the wall in right center in the top of the seventh inning to close out the game one scoring for the Eagles at one.
The freshman one-two punch of Joshua Ibarra and Will Cohen kick started game two for Concordia. Ibarra completed four innings, struck out four Sea Lions, and allowed three runs. Relieving the right-hander, LHP Cohen threw two innings and allowed three hits and one run.
Southpaw Sam Reed fired from the hill in both games, pitching one complete inning in game one to relieve Zalasky and closing out the final two innings in game two. Reed struck out four and earned his first win of the season in game two while the Eagles offense pressed for the lead and the defense held on behind him.
Offensively, Tominaga hit a homer over the center field fence in the top of the first inning to score Holland and give the Eagles the 2-0 lead. The senior received his third RBI of game two in the third inning after scoring Bailey Collins. Point Loma tied the game up in the fourth inning and once again in the seventh after Nick Grimes singled through the right side to score Tominaga in the fifth. In the eighth, Holland singled to score Tony Garcia III to take the lead 5-4 and the Eagles played defense behind Reed for the win.
