SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Concordia Women's Water Polo Team dropped two close battles on Saturday, falling to Santa Clara 8-7 before dropping a contest to Cal State East Bay 11-8.
Game one: CUI - 7, Santa Clara - 8
Corbin Bricks put CUI on the board first with two quick goals in the final three minutes of the opening period. Santa Clara struck with 35 seconds remaining, but
Dailynn Santoro answered back for CUI, putting the Eagles up 3-1 at the close of the quarter.
Santa Clara got their offense gong quickly to begin the second quarter, scoring two goals to tie the game 3-3. A
Shannon Graham goal was quickly answered by the Broncos before
Lindsey Heaney and
Katharine Leese went back-to-back to put CUI in front 6-4 with 1:15 to go in the half.
Hanna Jordan added to the Eagle advantage less than a minute and a half into the third frame, pushing CUI to a 7-4 lead. Santa Clara scored three goals in the remainder of the quarter to even the score at seven apiece.
The final quarter was a defensive battle as both teams failed to score until the Broncos found a hole with 17 seconds remaining in the game. They carried the 8-7 lead through the final seconds to take home the win.
Bricks led CUI with two goals in the game and
Ariana Olmos made 11 saves.
Game two: CUI - 8, CSUEB - 11
Kelley Geurts found the back of the net first for the Eagles just two minutes into the opening quarter. Santoro added two goals throughout the period, but CUI was well-matched and the quarter ended with the teams tied 3-3.
The Pioneers scored two to open the second frame, giving CSUEB a 5-3 lead at the 1:57 mark.
Ramsie Haskell began to chip away at the lead, scoring with 1:22 left in the half, but the Pioneers went into halftime with a 6-4 lead.
Jordan and Heaney each contributed in the third quarter, but CSUEB managed to outscore CUI by four in the period and push their advantage to 10-6.
Jordan worked again in the final quarter, scoring a goal along with Santoro, but the Eagles were unable to overcome the Pioneers, falling 11-8. Santoro led CUI in game two with three goals.
What's Next: The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday when the host Princeton at home at 1:30 p.m.
