CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Concordia Women's Water Polo team split the opening day of the 2018 Convergence Tournament, defeating Chapman 8-4 before falling to Cal State Monterey Bay 10-8. They went on to go 1-1 on the final day of the Convergence Tournament Saturday, defeating St. Francis (N.Y.) 13-9 before falling to Sonoma State 11-7.
Game one: CUI – 8, Chapman - 4
Corbin Bricks scored the first Eagle goal of the day less than two minutes into the start of the game. Chapman retaliated 30 seconds later but CUI put two quick goals together, one from Kelley Guerts and another from Lindsey Heaney, to retake the lead at 3-1. The Panthers found the back of the net on a power play with 26 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to 3-2.
Bricks struck again in the opening minute of the second period to put the Eagles up by two. Chapman scored to bring them within one at the 1:20 mark, but Ramsie Haskell turned right around and found the net 15 seconds after. Dailynn Santoro pushed the advantage to 6-3 with a goal with just 14 seconds remaining.
The third quarter was quiet for both teams until the 2:16 mark when Heaney scored her second of the game, pushing the lead to 7-3. She added one more with under a minute remaining off an assist from Emily Lawless to cap the scoring.
No goals were scored in the final quarter and CUI came away with the 8-4 win.
Heaney led the Eagles with three goals and Bricks added two. Siena Goggia made seven saves in goal for the Eagles.
Game two: CUI – 8, CSUMB – 10
The Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay struck first in the Eagles' second contest of the day and held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Santoro scored the first Eagle goal in the first quarter with 2:08 remaining, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Hanna Jodan scored one minute into the second period to bring CUI within one.
Monterey Bay answered with three goals to push their lead to 6-2 before Haskell found the back of the net for the Eagles with 1:35 remaining.
Heaney and Bricks scored back-to-back goals in the third to bring CUI within one at a score of 7-6.
The Otters put together two straight goals in the fourth. Santoro led the Eagles final push, scoring with under two minutes in the game, but it was not enough to overtake CSUMB.
Heaney added two goals to her day to bring her total to five. Santoro led CUI in game two with three goals. Goggia made 11 saves in the loss.
Game one: CUI – 13, St. Francis – 9
The Eagles got the scoring started early when Jade Jette put CUI on the board 30 seconds into the first quarter. St. Francis evened the score at the 3:51 mark but Ramsie Haskell quickly answered back for the Eagles, putting them back in front 2-1 under a minute later. Lindsey Heaney stayed hot, after scoring five goals yesterday, and found the back of the net with 1:54 remaining in the quarter. Dailynn Santoro and Heaney went back-to-back less than 30 seconds apart to end the period with CUI up 5-1.
Heaney struck again two minutes into the second period with a goal assisted by Sierra Venegas. After a quick goal from St. Francis, Kelley Geurts chipped in a goal at the 5:08 mark to put Concordia up 7-2. The Eagles continued to carry the lead, thanks to goals from Hanna Jordan and Santoro, to close out the half with a 9-6 lead.
The first half of the third quarter was quiet except for a Corbin Bricks goal that pushed the lead to 10-6 with three minutes to go in the quarter.
Jade Jette scored her second goal of the game at 6:21 in the fourth quarter, extending the Eagle advantage to 11-7. Geurts scored two goals in the remainderof the quarter to push the Eagles to their 13-9 victory over St. Francis.
Geurts and Heaney each had three goals in the game to lead CUI. Venegas and Elena Isogawa each dished out two assists. Siena Goggia made 11 saves.
Game two: CUI – 7, SSU – 11
Concordia jumped on the board first with a goal from Jordan less than two minutes into the opening period. Sonoma State answered back with three goals in the remainder of the quarter to take a 3-1 lead.
The Seawolves put together two quick goals, less than a minute apart, to take a 5-1 lead in the second quarter. With 3:13 to play, Heaney found the net to get CUI back in the game.
SSU retaliated with two goals before Bricks scored with just six seconds left in the half.
Trailing 7-3 at the start of the second half, the Eagles allowed two more goals before Haskell put the ball in the net for the Eagles' fourth goal with 1:19 remaining in the period. Haskell followed this up with a goal with nine seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Isogawa and Bricks each scored in the final quarter of the game but the Eagles were unable to overcome the deficit, and the Seawolves came away with the 11-7 victory. Bricks and Haskell each chipped in two goals in the game. Goggia made five saves.
With the split, the Eagles now sit at 5-4 on the season. Next weekend, they head to Riverside, Calif. to take part in the Lancer Invitational where they will face George Washington and Fresno Pacific.
