After dropping the first two games in conference play last week, the Concordia softball team traveled to Honolulu to continue PacWest action Monday night. The No. 20 Eagles took on Chaminade in a doubleheader, winning both games to improve their conference record to 2-2.
GAME 1: Senior pitcher Grayson Harvey took the mound for the Eagles in game one, and for six innings, she did enough to put CUI in a position to win the game.
In the top of the 1st inning, the Eagles grabbed the lead just three batters into the game. After back to back singles by Ryann Ferguson and McKinsey Thorpe, Kailey Palazzolo reached on a fielding error that allowed Ferguson to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
The game would go back and forth for the next several innings, with Chaminade scoring two in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take the lead, but Concordia came right back in the top of the 3rd, scoring one and tying the game on a bases loaded walk by Sarah Kretschmar.
Though Chaminade would again take the lead following a solo home run by Rainelle Matsuoki in the bottom half of the 3rd, it wasn't enough as Concordia came right back. The Eagles tied the score in the 4th on a double by Ferguson, who finished the game with three hits. In the 5th, Kretschmar gave the Eagles the lead for good, homering to left to put CUI up 4-3. That was all Harvey needed. After six strong innings, Callie Nunes came in to close it out in the bottom of the 7th for the 4-3 Eagle win.
GAME 2: After winning the opening game of the doubleheader, it was more of the same for the Eagles in game two. Following her save, Nunes was on the mound for the night cap. She was given a lead early and capitalized.
In the top of the 1st, Thorpe scored on a fielders choice to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Thorpe scored again, this time knocked in by a Palazzolo double to deep center. The Eagles added insurance runs in the 4th, with Thorpe knocking in two more. In the 6th, Thorpe was at it again, bringing in one more to make the score 5-0 entering the bottom half of the 6th.
The final six outs were not be easy for Concordia, as Chaminade made a late rally, scoring two in the 6th and two in the 7th. Concordia posted one final run themselves in the top of the 7th on a Michelle Lieng single. When the game came to a close, the Eagles were on top again, running their overall record to 9-4 and evening up their PacWest record at 2-2. Nunes collected her third win of the season. Palazzolo finished four-for-four on the night and Thorpe finished two-for-three with a walk in the 7-4 decision.
What's Next: The Eagles continue their Hawaiian tour with a double header tomorrow against Hawaii Pacific beginning at 2 PST.
