The Concordia Eagles softball team returned to the field on Wednesday. After winning both games of a doubleheader against Chaminade on Monday, the Eagles played their second doubleheader of the week, taking on Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu.
GAME 1: In the opening game, Callie Nunes pitched a gem. The freshman from Modesto was in complete control, shutting down the HPU lineup. She pitched six shutout innings, giving up only one hit and walking no batters. She struck out 10 batters on 97 pitches.
Nunes had a lead to work with the entire game. In the top of the 1st, the Eagles got on the scoreboard right away. Kailey Palazzolo scored the first run of the game on a double by Amy Eilefson. That's all Nunes needed.
In the 5th inning, the Eagles added three runs. After Heather Nonora crossed the plate on a bases loaded fielder's choice, Eilefson broke the game open on her second hit of the day. She smashed a single to center, bringing home two and running the score up to 4-0.
After six brilliant innings from Nunes, Jordan Quinn finished the game off in the 7th. She pitched one perfect inning and the Eagles won 4-0.
GAME 2: In the second game of the doubleheader, the tables were turned on Concordia. Hawaii Pacific starting pitcher Alexa McCoin pitched well, going six strong and exiting with a lead.
HPU got on the board first, as Mary Dungey knocked in two for the Sharks in the bottom of the 1st. Concordia clawed closer, but could never catch all the way up. In the 2nd inning, Lauren Lopez scored the first run for CUI on an infield single by McKinsey Thorpe to cut the lead in half.
In the 4th inning, the Sharks added three more runs, and the Eagles were only able to counter with one of their own in the top of the 5th.
McCoin exited the game for the Sharks after six innings, having struck out 10 batters and allowing just two runs. Gabriella Nowack finished off the game, and put the Eagles down in order in the top of the 7th. The Eagles' record dropped to 10-5 with the 5-2 loss.
What's Next: The Eagles take the field again on Thursday, March 8 for another doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific University.
