Game Recap: Softball | | Spencer Stueve

Nunes stars in doubleheader, Eagles win series over HPU 3-1

For the third time in the last four days, the CUI Eagles softball team played two.  Entering Thursday's action against Hawaii Pacific, the Eagles were 3-1 on their Hawaii trip with four games remaining before heading back home.

GAME 1: In the first game of the doubleheader, the 19th ranked Eagles had their ace on the mound, and once again, she delivered.  Callie Nunes was brilliant, and inning after inning, Nunes mowed down the Sharks.  She finished with 12 strikeouts, walking three, and giving up just two hits.
Through seven innings, the score was still tied at zero, as Jordan Curry of HPU pitched a gem herself.
In the top of the eighth, Concordia finally broke through, plating a run on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.  It was all Nunes would need.  She finished off her masterpiece by shutting down the Sharks in the bottom of the 8th.  The win over HPU was Nunes' fifth win of the season.

GAME 2: Game two of the doubleheader started off much like game one, with very little offense.  Through three innings, Grayson Harvey of Concordia and Emilee Leonard of Hawaii Pacific dueled, with neither pitcher giving up a run. In the top of the 4th, Concordia got on the board, scoring two unearned runs off of Leonard.  One inning later, however, their lead disappeared.  HPU struck for two to tie the game before Nunes was called in out of the bullpen.  She continued where she left off earlier in the day - dominant. The score remained tied at two all the way until the top of the 9th inning.  McKinsey Thorpe knocked in the go-ahead run, plating Heather Nonora and giving Nunes the cushion she needed.  In the bottom of the 9th, Nunes completed the job, finishing off the Sharks and finishing her incredible day in style.  She was again the winning pitcher, her second win of the day, and sixth of the year.

What's next: Concordia caps their Hawaii trip on Saturday with another doubleheader, this time against the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
