Nunes and Harvey Dominate in Doubleheader Sweep

For much of the season, pitching has led the way for the Eagles.  Heading into Tuesday's doubleheader, the Eagles had won three consecutive games, giving up just five total runs over the span.  The 1-2 punch of Callie Nunes and Grayson Harvey pitched on Tuesday and again it was their dominance on the mound that stole the show.

GAME ONE: Star freshman pitcher Callie Nunes proved that just one run was all she needed.  In game one against CSU Dominquez Hills, Nunes pitched seven innings, giving up just two hits and no runs.  It was the 6th time this season she has pitched at least seven innings and held the opponent scoreless.  She has 19 scoreless outings in 26 appearances so far this season and a miniscule 0.38 ERA.

Through three innings it still wasn't enough, however.  Though she had yet to give up a single hit over the first three frames, the score remained 0-0.  In the top of the 4th, the Eagles got on the board.  After a one out Michelle Lieng single up the middle, Sarah Kretschmar singled down the left field line.  With runners on 1st and 3rd, the Eagles
perfectly executed a double steal, with Kretschmar taking off for second and Lieng coming home on the throw.

The 1-0 lead was all Nunes needed.  She shut down the Toros the rest of the way and earned the win.

Eagle Eye: Nunes pitched seven innings, giving up just two hits and walking two.  She struck out 12 batters in the process.  Amanda Gjertsen and Lieng each finished one-for-three at the plate.  Kretschmar finished two-for-two.

GAME TWO: Like Nunes, Grayson Harvey only needed one run of support to earn a victory over CSUDH. The Toros would threaten in the 3rd inning, with a runner reaching second base, but Harvey then buckled down, striking out the final batter to end the threat.  It was the closest Dominquez Hills would get to scoring.  Harvey dominated the rest of the way, allowing just two walks and no hits over the final four innings.

The Eagles, like they did in game one, were able to do just enough offensively to come out on top.  Kailey Palazzolo led off the 2nd inning with a single to left.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then was brought in on a Rebecca Borstmayer double.  The one run was all the Eagles scored, but it was all they needed.  For the second consecutive game, they won 1-0.

Eagle Eye: Harvey pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits and striking out four.  Borstmayer finished two-for-three with an RBI.

What's Next: The Eagles take on Holy Names University in a doubleheader at Eagles Field on Wednesday.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 PM and game two will start at approximately 4 PM.
