The Eagles took their nine game winning streak to the Inland Empire on Saturday, taking on a strong California State University San Bernardino Coyotes team in a doubleheader. The Coyotes entered the game with a 22-14 record, but they were no match for the Eagles.
GAME ONE: Having pitched just three innings out of the bullpen in Friday's doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur University,
Callie Nunes was fresh for game one against the Coyotes.
The Eagles offense gave Nunes a lead early. In the top of the 2
nd inning,
Amanda Gjertsen led off the inning with a single to right. She moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kailey Palazzolo. One batter later, she was brought in by
Mackenzie Graham.
With the Eagles up 1-0, Nunes kept mowing down CSUSB. The offense continued piling on runs, adding one in the 3
rd and two in the 5
th. In the 3
rd inning,
Ryann Ferguson reached on an infield hit and then came around to score on an
Amy Eilefson double to center. Two innings later, the Eagles collected three hits, one each by
Brooke Jackson, Ferguson and Eilefson, to add two more runs.
The 4-0 lead was enough for Nunes, who continued her dominant season. Though Nunes would struggle in the 6
th inning, giving up three runs on four hits, she got through the inning and the Eagles still led. It was the first game in Nunes' career she gave up at least three earned runs.
With the score now 4-3, the Eagles added insurance runs in the top of the 7
th inning. Ferguson collected another hit, her third of the day, and Eilefson smashed a two run home run over the left field wall.
Despite the rough 6
th inning for Nunes, the freshman phenom registered another win, her 18
th of the year.
Grayson Harvey played a role as well, coming in to collect the final three outs in the 7
th inning, earning her first save of the season. The 10
th consecutive win for the Eagles was a true team effort, with seven different batters collecting a hit and two pitchers combining to collect 21 outs.
Eagle Eye: Ferguson finished three-for-four with three runs scored. Eilefson finished three-for-four with four RBI's and nine total bases.
GAME TWO: The second game didn't go so well for the Eagles. Though they were able to jump out to an early lead, scoring on an RBI groundout by Eilefson in the 1
st inning, CUI was unable to keep up with the hot Coyote bats.
In the bottom of the 1
st, CSUSB came right back, scoring two runs on two hits to take the lead. The Eagles tied the score back up in the 3
rd inning. After an infield single by Gjertsen and back to back hits by Palazzolo and
McKinsey Thorpe, the score was 2-2.
Concordia had many chances throughout the game, but they weren't able to come up with the timely hits to put more runs on the board. The Eagles finished with 10 hits, but left nine runners on base.
The Coyotes' offense was also hot, but were more opportunistic with runners on base. They collected 11 hits and five walks, leaving seven runners on base and scoring seven. The Coyotes scored three in the 5
th and two in the 6
th to run away with victory by a 7-2 margin. The Eagles' 10 game winning streak was snapped.
Eagle Eye: Gjertsen finished four-for-four at the plate. Thorpe finished two-for-two.
What's Next: Concordia returns home for a Sunday doubleheader against California State University East Bay. Game one is set to begin at 11:30 AM.
