The Eagles' 10 game winning streak was snapped on Saturday, and when they took the field against Cal State East Bay on Sunday, it was time to start a new streak.
GAME ONE: The Eagles jumped out to another early lead over the Pioneers in game one. After three perfect innings by
Grayson Harvey to start the game, CUI got in the board in the bottom of the 3
rd.
Sarah Kretschmar led off the inning with an 0-2 single to left. She moved up to second on a
Heather Nonora sacrifice bunt, and two batters later, she was brought home on a
Brooke Jackson single to give the Eagles the early advantage.
In the 4
th inning, the Pioneers got their first runner, but it was the Eagles who got on the scoreboard once again.
Amy Eilefson led off the bottom half of the inning with a line drive shot over the wall in left center field for her team leading 10
th home run of the year.
With the score 2-0, Harvey had the lead she needed. In the 5
th inning, the Pioneers drew two walks, but Harvey got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning. In the 6
th, they would again threaten, drawing a walk and collecting their first extra base hit on a double to the gap, but the Pioneers only scored one and the Eagles remained on top.
With the Eagles up by just one run, the offense broke through in the bottom of the 6
th, scoring two and giving the Eagles insurance going into the 7
th. Eilefson led off the inning with a walk,
Amanda Gjertsen then doubled to left field,
Kailey Palazzolo hit a sacrifice fly and
Kaylee Dalgarn singled to center to bring in another.
Up 4-2,
Callie Nunes came in and recorded the final three outs, earning her 6
th save of the year.
Eagle Eye: Eilefson finished one-for-two with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Kretschmar finished one-for-two with a walk and a run scored. Harvey earned her ninth win of the season, going six strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits.
GAME TWO: In the late game, the Eagles were forced to play come from behind ball after falling behind early. In the top of the 1
st inning, the Pioneers strung together enough quality at bats to get on the board. With one out, Courtney Leyba drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then Maddie Ramirez singled to center, bringing home
Leyba.
Down 1-0, the Eagles took to the plate, but had no luck early. After going down in order in the bottom of the 1
st inning, the Eagles loaded the bases in the second but couldn't bring a run in.
In the 4
th, the Pioneers struck again. Two walks, one hit and an error brought in one more run for CSUEB. Nunes came in out of the bullpen in the middle of the 4
th and shut the Pioneers out the inning. The CUI offense still had work to do, however.
In the 5
th inning, the offense went to work. After a one out single by
Brooke Jackson,
Ryann Ferguson singled up the middle and Hughes walked to load the bases. Jackson then came home on a passed ball and Gjertsen smashed a double to right field to plate Ferguson and Hughes.
In the 6
th, the Pioneers came back. After two walks and a single, the game was again tied. In the bottom half of the inning, the crazy game continued. Jackson singled again, Ferguson walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch and then Jackson came home on a ground ball to second by Hughes. With two outs, Eilefson broke the game wide open, launching her second home run of the day, a long home run to left center field to put the Eagles up 6-3.
Jordan Quinn then re-entered to shut down CSUEB in the 7
th to finish off the dramatic win for the Eagles.
Eagle Eye: Gjertsen finished three-for-four with two RBI's. Eilefson finished one-for-four with two RBI's.
What's Next: CUI takes on Cal State San Marcos on the road on Wednesday. Game one begins at 2 PM and game two will start at approximately 4 PM.
