Eagles earn highest finish at PacWest tournament in program history

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Concordia Men's Tennis earned its highest finish at the PacWest Tournament in program history following its 5-2 win over No. 3 Point Loma to win the rubber match. The Eagles opened the tournament with a 5-4 upset of No. 4 Sonoma State and added a win on the final day to take third place.

After a semifinal loss to No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific, who later went on to win the tournament, the Eagles were eager to turn their luck around. No. 3 seed Point Loma was picked as the favorite to run away with the third place title. Concordia established dominance early on by winning two of three doubles matches in both the #2 and #3 positions. The #2 doubles partners Nikita Katsnelson and Shimon Murakami won one, while #3 doubles partners Thomas Kyle and Man Hon Ko took the other win for the Eagles.

In singles competition, Concordia dropped the first two positions but secured the last three for a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Point Loma. Daniel Reddmann (6-4, 6-4) and Man Hon Ko (6-0, 6-2) defeated their opponent in two sets a piece. In the #5 singles position, Thomas Kyle clinched the match for the Eagles with a third set win (6-2, 2-6, 6-2).

Women's Team:  The Concordia Women's Tennis team brought their best efforts to the PacWest tournament and were faced with tough competition. A Wednesday morning 5-1 win over Dixie State propelled the Eagles to the quarterfinals round. In the women's quarterfinal match on Thursday, Concordia went head-to-head with the No. 2 seed Academy of Art. The Eagles fell 5-1 and dropped out of the running for the championship trophy.

On Friday, CUI was pitted against a feisty Dominican lineup and came out on top in thrilling fashion. Ghazal Pakbaten clinched the match at the #2 singles position after singles wins by teammates Johanna Keeline, Ghada Al-ajeely, and Kathrine Jensen

The women faced Sonoma State on Saturday to fight for fifth place but fell short and earned a respectable sixth place of twelve teams entered.
