Martin squeezes CUI past Dixie State with walk off, Eagles split with Trailblazers

With the bases loaded and an even 5-5 score in the bottom of the ninth, Head Coach Joe Turgeon called on Chris Martin to make some magic. With one out and a 2-1 count, Martin laid down a smooth bunt and squeezed Hunter Holland home for the game-winning run. The Eagles and Trailblazers ended the series with a 2-2 split.

Game 1: With two down, the Trailblazers rallied to score three runs on two hits. Their next at bats, they posted one more run from two hits. In the bottom of five, Concordia caught momentum. Holland was hit by a pitch and Tony Garcia singled on the first pitch. Dominic Castro stepped up to the plate next, and reached safely on a Trailblazer error, bringing Holland around and Garcia to third. Nick Bates followed with a RBI to put CUI within two. After three straight DSU outs, the Eagle offense earned a few runs. Haloa Dudoit led off with a single up the middle and Bailey Collins hit one to right field. Alex DiMascio drove in Dudoit with his single to right field and Holland's sacrifice bunt advanced the two base runners. Garcia sent another RBI single to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. In a last chance attempt, Dixie State tied the game at five in the top of the ninth, but the Eagles refused the lose. Holland led off with a deep double and reached third on a Trailblazer error on Garcia's grounder. Dixie State intentionally loaded the bases and brought Martin to the plate. Holland took off for the squeeze, and Martin executed the bunt for the Eagle win.

Eagle Eye: Dudoit and Garcia both posted two hits. Holland scored two runs with one hit. Morgan Brannock earned his third win of the season. Freshman Will Cohen pitched six innings with four strikeouts.

Game 2: The Trailblazers retaliated early, posting three rus in the first and two in the second. CUI registered a run of their own in the first. Dillon Millar knocked a single to right center on a full count, scooted to second on a balk and ultimately scored on a pass ball. DSU added one more in the sixth, but catcher Juan Zuniga picked off a Trailblazer at second to end the inning. Jack Ruegge came in to pitch in the top of the seventh. The right hander tossed a complete inning, allowing zero runs and one strikeout. In the bottom of the ninth, DiMascio hit a double and came around on the single from Zuniga to make the score 2-6. Castro came up next, and blasted one over the head of the center fielder for two bases. Martin
and Millar pulled through again for CUI, both hitting shots up the middle for two Eagle runs. Dudoit reached on an error to load the bases, and Holland hit a sacrifice fly. Despite the comeback surge, Concordia couldn't overcome the Trailblazers.

What's Next: Concordia concludes PacWest play with a series against Biola University beginning Monday, May 7th at 3 PM at Eagles Field.
