After three weeks away from home, Concordia returned to Eagles Field on Saturday, taking on Biola University in a doubleheader. Both games were pitchers duels and one ended in a walk off.
GAME ONE: In the top of the 1
st inning, the Eagles jumped out to a lead and it was all they needed with
Callie Nunes on the mound.
Ryann Ferguson notched a single to right field, stole second, and then was knocked in on a
Kailey Palazzolo single to center.
In the 4
th, Biola got their only hit off Nunes, but two batters later, Areana Ramos grounded into a double play to end the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, CUI added to their lead on a leadoff home run over the left field wall by
Amy Eilefson.
Nunes cruised the rest of the way, not allowing another runner. After retiring the side in the top of the 7
th, her masterful performance was over, giving up just one hit and facing the minimum. The Eagles won by the score of 3-0.
Eagle Eye: Nunes pitched seven innings, giving up just one hit, walking zero and striking out six. Ferguson finished one-for-three with a run scored. Palazzolo finished one-for-three with an RBI.
GAME TWO: The Eagles jumped out to an early lead again in game two, plating two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning. After
McKinsey Thorpe led off the game with a walk, Ferguson reached on an error, and three batters later, Eilefson brought them both home on a single to right.
With CUI up 2-0, Biola crept back in the game. In the top of the 3
rd inning, they cut the lead to one, scoring on a passed ball.
Two innings later, Biola got on the board again, scoring on a sacrifice fly to even the score at two. The two pitching staffs would go back and forth, shutting the opposition down
over the next several innings. Harvey went seven innings for CUI and Austin Paige matched her pitch for pitch. At the end of seven, the score remained tied at two.
In the eighth inning,
Jordan Quinn came in for the Eagles, posting another zero on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the 8
th, the Eagles again rallied. With one out,
Sarah Kretschmar drew a walk and
Michelle Lieng followed it up with a rocket single up the middle. With
Kaylee Dalgarn at the plate, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. As the next pitch came to the plate, Dalgarn squared around for a bunt and popped it up over the head of the charging first baseman. Kretschmar came around to score the walk off run and give the Eagles the doubleheader sweep.
Eagle Eye: Harvey pitched seven innings, giving up just two runs, one earned. Eilefson finished one-for-three with two RBI's. Dalgarn finished one-for-three with an RBI.
What's Next: The Eagles are back on the road next week, taking on California State University Dominquez Hills in a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game one begins at 12 PM and game two will start at approximately 2 PM.
