Letona Nets First Goal of Soccer Season Against Cal State San Marcos

This year's Concordia men's soccer squad features a number of upperclassmen and seniors that are expected to play key roles throughout this season.

The Eagles received a boost from senior John Letona in their regular season opener Thursday when the former Capistrano Valley prep star tallied his first goal of the year against Cal State San Marcos.

Letona's goal set the tone early for CUI but the visiting Cougars were able to bounce back before intermission.

Within a span of about three minutes, CSUSM figured out a way to capitalize on two scoring chances and flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.

Andrew Stalboerger collected the equalizer and moments later redshirt freshman Tyler Schrock curled a long shot past the keeper to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.

CUI outshot the Cougars 13-11 and put three more shots on goal in the second half (7-4).

Concordia also piled up eight corner kicks which was twice as many as CSUSM.

The Eagles will look to build on all of those scoring chances as they move forward with the rest of their non-conference schedule.

Concordia heads down to La Jolla to battle the UC San Diego Tritons next Thursday on September 6 with the match slated to start at 7 p.m.
