Eagles Put A Scare Into No. 5 UC San Diego

The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team rattled one of the top-ranked squads in NCAA Division II when the visiting UC San Diego Tritons came to town for CUI's season opener.

The Tritons were on upset alert after a nifty tic-tac-toe goal by Eagles sophomore Carmany Jones in the 44th minute.

Concordia Sophomore Marianna Maldonado found a cutting Emma Lyon who then quickly passed ahead to Jones for the quick connection.  Jones dropped to the ground and placed the ball low and to the left corner where she was able to hit the back of the net.

The Concordia bench erupted with cheers and the goal gave the home team a 1-0 lead at intermission.

But the score also helped UC San Diego refocus. The Tritons seemed stunned after falling behind but regrouped at halftime and scored the equalizer just a few minutes into the second half.

Both teams battled the rest of the way and the Tritons ultimately prevailed when Summer Bales assisted Michelle Badour for the go-ahead score in the 87th minute.

The CUI women's soccer team will return to action this coming Saturday when the Eagles travel to Cal State San Bernardino for an 11:00 a.m. match.  Their next home game is Saturday, September 8 at 11 a.m. against Sonoma State.
