CUI Women’s Soccer Tallies First Victory

The Eagles bounced back from Thursday's tough loss to No. 5 UC San Diego with a solid 3-1 road victory on Saturday over Cal State University San Bernardino.

Concordia tallied the first goal of the match in the 38th minute when sophomore Marianna Maldonado stole the ball and quickly booted a shot to the right corner with her left foot.

After the Coyotes tied the game early in the second half, Concordia reclaimed the lead off a corner kick. Cienah Reed connected with senior Kryssa Johnson who tapped the ball in on the near post.

Anaheim Hills native McKenna Carrillo gave the Eagles some breathing room when the senior notched an unassisted goal off a deflection in the 85th minute of play.
Concordia's defense held the fort the rest of the way.

"We had a great team effort and a lot of people contributed to today's success," said CUI associate head coach Cheyne Gordon. "We defended well as a team and we had great leadership on the field.  We need to clean up some of our attacking moments but each day we are improving."

The Eagles outshot the host team 14 to five and put eight shots on goal.

CSUSB only managed the one shot on net which led to their lone tally.

"We defended well as a team and I thought (the win) was important because it helped us gain more confidence," added Maldonado.

Concordia returns to action next Saturday, September 8th at 11 a.m. when the Eagles host No. 25 Sonoma State.
