IRVINE, Calif. — Following its first win of the 2018 season, Concordia Womens Soccer (1-2) hosted No. 25 Sonoma State (2-0-2) at Eagles Field. The Seawolves took an early lead and despite a comeback effort, the Eagles fell 2-1.
Sonoma State put pressure on the Eagles from the first whistle, getting a shot off in the first minute. By the sixth minute, SSU's West got through the CUI defense and passed a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal to steal the lead.
After settling into the game, Concordia began to connect more passes and and win the ball in the midfield to take control of the game. Senior Kryssa Johnson netted the equalizer in the 18th minute of the first half from Cienah Reed's corner kick. Reed sent a ball in to the six yard box to find Johnson's head and sent the teams to halftime in a 1-1 draw.
The teams entered the second half with a battle at their feet. Concordia pressed first with shots by Johnson and Carmany Jones. Fighting back, the Seawolves offense hit a shot off the crossbar and earned a corner kick but found no result until the 65th minute. Sonoma State scored the game winner after a shot rebounded off the left goal post and popped out towards the middle to be finished in the left corner.
"It took us a little while to get going and adjust to the way they were playing, but I have to give credit to Sonoma. I thought they did a really good job of creating different solutions that we hadn't seen before," Coach Cheyne Gordon said. "I thought we adjusted well, it just came down to little things and that's always going to be the case when you play top notch teams."
The Concordia Womens soccer team returns to Eagles Field to host CCAA foe Cal Poly Pomona on Sep. 12th. The game is slated for 3:30pm.
