Reed cuts the lead, Eagles fall to CPP

IRVINE, Calif. —In its last game before the PacWest conference opener, the Concordia women's soccer team (1-3) fell to Cal Poly Pomona (3-2-0).  The Broncos downed the Eagles 2-1 after a lone Concordia goal scored by Cienah Reed

Reed started the game and offensive attack with a header shot attempt that missed wide right. Cal Poly Pomona seemed to take control in the midfield and pressured the Eagles defense early.  A Bronco corner kick landed at the head of CPP's Allison Hung for the first score of the game.

Without settling into the match, the teams continued to play back-and-forth soccer. Each team earned possession and played a series of long ball passes before finally finding composure.

With minutes ticking by, the Eagles gained momentum and moved as a team offensively. Concordia created plays by earning corner kicks and free kicks from fouls in the middle of the field. The teams headed to halftime with a 1-0 Cal Poly Pomona lead.

The second half brought more intensity to the tight game. McKenna Carrillo, Isabella Angotti-Jones, and Danni Barton all tested the goalkeeper with shots early on. In the 64th minute, the Broncos found the back of the net once again with a pass into the net by CPP's Aline Graham.

Reed took a free kick about three minutes later that sailed over a jumble of players in the six yard box and into the back of the net from a deflection. The Eagles still trailed 2-1 with 22 minutes still remaining in the game.

In one last push, it seemed that all the Eagles were pressed in the six-yard box scrambling for a goal but couldn't connect with the netting.

Looking ahead, Eagles women's soccer returns to Eagles Field for its PacWest conference opener against Fresno Pacific University. The competition is slated for Thursday, Sep. 20 at 3:30 pm.
