Concordia used multiple combinations Wednesday night to try and solve the visiting Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans.
But after dropping a hard-fought first set by a count of 26-24, the Eagles could not put a rally together in the second and third sets and the Vulcans closed out the match, 3-0.
A turning point came early in the second set when Concordia marched out to a 5-1 advantage.
After a UHH timeout, the Vulcans promptly rattled off a 17-5 run to take control.
Ailsa Watson led the Eagles in multiple categories.
The sophomore setter contributed 17 assists and eight digs.
Freshmen
Cambria Fernandez and
Patience O'Neal also combined for a dozen kills.
CUI's
Hannah Tostado curved three serves over the net for aces, but Hawai'i Hilo was able to adjust behind preseason PacWest Conference selection Mina Grant.
Grant was a steadying force at libero for the visitors and finished with a game-high 13 digs.
Concordia will regroup and prepare to face Chaminade this Saturday during the volleyball program's "Alumni Night."
The match begins at 5 p.m. and the school will honor the 2018 Concordia softball team after the second set.
PacWest conference commissioner Bob Hogue and CUI Athletics Director
Mo Roberson will present the PacWest Trophy to last year's softball conference champions.
