Wednesday's volleyball match between the Eagles of Concordia and Biola featured a family reunion.
For the first time in their college careers, Concordia junior
Julia DenBoer and her cousin Christina (Tina) DenBoer of Biola shared the same court.
But unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the hosts were the ones that walked away with a hard-fought 3-0 victory.
After falling behind 5-1 in the first set, Concordia rallied and was able to draw even.
Hannah Tostado gave CUI a boost when she threw a block party with
Julia DenBoer to cut the deficit to 20-19.
A couple serves later,
Emily LaCroix-Dalluhn and
Jordan Mineer combined for a block to pull Concordia even at 21-21.
After the two teams exchanged points, DenBoer was credited with a kill to give Concordia its first lead, 23-22.
But Biola would regroup after a timeout and escape with the first set, 26-24.
CUI fell behind 13-3 in the second set but was able to make another run. The Green and Gold went on a 6-1 tear to force a Biola timeout but ultimately could not make up all that ground.
The Red and Black secured a 25-11 victory to take game two.
In the third set, Concordia was able to take an early lead and make Biola play from behind for a few points.
After both teams were knotted at 8-8, the home team opened up a brief 13-9 advantage. Â But CUI dug in and rattled off consecutive points to tie things up at 18-18.
Biola then sent the crowd home early by bashing out seven of the next eight points to claim the third set, 25-19.
"We didn't really execute the gameplan and we kind of were on our heels a lot tonight," said CUI head coach
Paula Weishoff. "(Biola) played well but it was a struggle tonight. I thought Julia and
Clarice Buchanan really did a nice job for us and then
Naomi Jean came in and helped solidify our passing which gave us a boost."
Patience O'Neal racked up eight kills to lead the charge for CUI. Â Sophomore
Ailsa Watson supplied 15 assists.
Biola was led by Christina DenBoer who racked up 10 kills while her cousin Julia finished with seven.Â
Concordia's next chance to get into the win column comes this Saturday when the Eagles visit Fresno Pacific.
