Green and Golden Goal: Eagles Sink Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. — True freshman Emma Lyon and the Concordia women's soccer team pulled off a non-conference win on the road against Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Lyon lead the Eagles offense scoring the squads only goal in regulation time in the first half. From a penalty kick, Carmany Jones netted the golden goal in the 105th minute.

The Cougars were picked second in the 2018 PacWest preseason poll. Azusa Pacific was right behind favorite FPU with 119 points and, like Concordia, earned three first-place votes. Last year, APU tied with FPU for second place, winning its final three games to come within one point of a repeat conference championship.

Lyon entered the game in the 42nd minute, right before halftime. The Eagles earned their third corner kick in a row with Megan Hussey on the ball. Hussey smashed a cross into the 18-yard-box that popped loose and found Lyon on the right side of the six-yard-box. The freshman passed the ball to the back of the net giving Concordia the lead just before half.

Azusa Pacific fought back in the second half scoring a goal of their own from a free kick in the 70th minute. At the end of regulation time, the teams were tied at 1.

The first overtime proved unproductive for either side. In the second overtime period, APU found themselves in their defensive third once again. A defensive foul inside the 18-yard-box gave the Eagles a penalty kick, taken by sophomore Carmany Jones. Jones knocked the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for the golden goal to secure the Eagles victory, 2-1.

"The girls played well and dug deep for each other. APU was a quality, well-organized group so for us to get three points there is a great accomplishment," Assistant Coach Cheyne Gordon said. "We have a huge week ahead to tighten up a few things before facing a Point Loma team who is also very good."
