Brown Helps Concordia Break Through For First PacWest Win

In their first conference home game of the year, the Concordia University Irvine Eagles got back on track by sweeping Fresno Pacific.

Sophomore Jaclyn Brown led the Eagles with 13 kills while libero Clarice Buchanan added a team-high 13 digs to pace the home team.

The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Green and Gold.

In a case of déjà vu, CUI took all three sets by the same score of 25-21.

"We executed the game plan and our blocking and serving was good," said head coach Paula Weishoff. "Jaclyn Brown in particular had a very good night."

"I really liked what I saw with our team chemistry," added Weishoff. "It was a great team win."

The Eagles racked up five blocks in the first set and ended the match with an impressive total of ten rejections.

"Ten team blocks was phenomenal and Riley (Gill) and Clarice (Buchanan) had a great night defensively," said Weishoff.

The Eagles held the Sunbirds to a measly .061 offensive percentage.

CUI freshman Jordan Mineer spiked three kills in the opening set to help get the Eagles off to a good start.

Freshman Patience O'Neal added a pair of spikes to help the cause in the opening stanza and finished the night with eight kills.

Down 7-4 in the third, CUI rallied to tie the game at 12-12 after scooping up a critical point after a long volley.

A few minutes later, Lauren Braden picked up an ace and helped the Eagles build a commanding 23-18 advantage.

Ailsa Watson tallied a team-high three aces on the night and helped close out the Sunbirds down the stretch.

Concordia hits the road to face Holy Names on Friday, September 14.  The next home game for the Eagles will be Monday, September 17 at 7 p.m. against Hawai'i Pacific.
