Eagles Fall to No. 1 USC, Bounce Back Against Chapman in Season Opener

IRVINE, CALIF. - The Concordia Women's Water Polo team took the pool for the first time of the 2019 season in a doubleheader at the Cal Baptist Mini. The Eagles lost to No. 1 USC, but was able to bounce back with their first win against Chapman University. 

CUI 0, USC 21

The first game for Concordia would be against No.1 USC, who came out strong in the pool and did not let up. The Eagles would take 12 shots on goal, while the Trojans would have 32, 21 of those making it in the goal. Siena Goggia had four saves during the game while Mauriama Moore led the team with three shots on goal. Ramsie Haskell, Dailynn Santoro, Lindsey Heaney followed right behind with two shots on goal. 

CUI 8, CHAPMAN 5 

The Eagles would come back in the afternoon to defeat Chapman by a close score of 8-5. 

The Panthers would score the first two goals in the first quarter jumping out with a 0-2 lead. Shannon Graham would score the first goal of the season for the Eagles in the first quarter to have them only down by one. Corbin Bricks would score the a goal with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, making the game score tied 2-2 at the end of the quarter. 

Chapman would again score the first goal in the second quarter, but Dailynn Santoro would score just under a minute after the Panthers made their goal. Elena Isogawa made her first goal of the season with just under a minute left in the quarter, with the Eagles taking the lead for the first time at the half. 

Coming back from the half, the Eagles would score one goal in the third quarter by Shannon Graham with 3:42 left, making that her second goal in the game taking an even bigger lead 5-3. 

In the last quarter, the most goals would be made totaling five, three of those being the Eagles goals shot by Shannon Graham, and Dailynn Santoro, and Hanna Jordan scoring with only 43 seconds left in the fourth. The Eagles would take their first win of the season with a final score 8-5. 

Ariana Olmos would have five saves during the game, playing the whole 32 minutes. The Eagles would outshoot the Panthers with 25 shots on goal, with the Panthers close behind at 19. 

Concordia will play Whittier College on Friday, February 8 at 1:30 PM at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif.
