IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia men's volleyball will face two opponents this week, hosting UC Santa Cruz on Thursday before traveling to La Jolla to take on UC San Diego on Saturday.
Concordia is currently 3-7 overall following a competitive 3-1 loss at then No. 3 UC Irvine last week. Junior
Jordan Hoppe leads the Eagles offense averaging 2.90 kills per set while sophomore
Addison Enriques is tops in the conference with 2.33 digs per set. Senior
Hunter Howell is averaging 0.91 blocks per set and is hitting .311 for 2019 which is a team-high.
ABOUT UC SANTA CRUZ
The Division III program out of Santa Cruz, Calif. are 6-5 on the season, winning their last five. The team features 16 players, five of which are upperclassmen, including a duo of seniors', middle blocker Raymond Cascio and outside hitter Kyle Donohoe. Cascio was recently named the AVCA/Sports Imports DIII Player of the Week after two victories where he hit .667 and averaged 3.22 kills per set and 1.56 blocks per set. Concordia is 8-2 against the Banana Slugs, the last meeting being in 2018 where CUI came out on top 3-0.
ABOUT UC SAN DIEGO
The Tritons are 3-5 on the season and despite their record, have faced heavy competition where five of their opponents were ranked in the top ten. UC San Diego is coming off a home sweep of Grand Canyon and is led by sophomore outside hitter Wyatt Harrison, who has two-times the amount of kills as the next Triton. Running the offense is junior setter Connor Walbrecht with 174 assists on the season. In 2018, Concordia and UC San Diego split the home-and-away series, with each team winning on their home court, bringing the series record to 4-3 in favor of the Tritons.
