Carrillo Leads Eagles to Victory in Bird Battle

HAYWARD, Calif.- The Eagles stayed unbeaten in the PacWest Conference after posting a 2-1 win over the Hawks in double overtime.

The first half was scoreless for both teams while CUI had a lot more shot opportunities than Holy Names.  The Hawks were putting up a fight with their defensive line and the Eagles were struggling to find the net.

In the second half, the Hawks were able to score two minutes in to take the lead of 1-0.  It did not take long for the Eagles to get their offense going.  Jadenn Carrillo continued to show her talent as she headed the ball in off of a free kick from senior Isabella Angotti-Jones to tie the game up 1-1.

"I've assisted Jadenn before, so I was looking for her for the free kick," said Angotti-Jones. "I knew I just needed to get it to the back of the sixth and she would get it."

Angotti-Jones is a well-rounded player and she knows her team well which helps with the chemistry and earning wins.

CUI kept getting good looks at the goal but was unable to break free again in regulation to find the back of the net.  The Eagles defense held the Hawks in check as well in the second half and the two squads prepared to move into overtime.

"We tried to tighten it up in the back and communicate more and stay more organized," stated Angotti-Jones.

The game headed into double overtime and that's when Carrillo struck again.  In the second overtime, Carrillo scored within the first two minutes to earn the golden goal off an assist by Kara Gilchrist.  Carrillo now leads CUI with six goals this season.

"It's an amazing feeling, I did not come here thinking I would be in this position," said Carrillo.  "You can only go up from here.  I can only hope for more goals, more assists, more great memories with my team, and looking forward to the rest of the season."

Carrillo is quite the talent and has a great work ethic.  She was the stud of the game against HNU and the entire Eagle team had her back.  This season is looking bright for the CUI women's soccer team and looking forward, the Eagles head to Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 19 to play at 1:00 p.m.

CUI's next home game is against Chaminade Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m as part of a doubleheader with the two men's squads which play at 3:30 p.m that afternoon.  Click here for the full CUI Eagles women's soccer schedule.
