Eagles Shutout Cougars in a 2-0 Victory

AZUSA, Calif.- The Eagles remained undefeated in conference play as they took down Azusa Pacific 2-0.

The battle between the Eagles and the Cougars has always been one to highlight in the schedule.  Since 2007 the Cougars have been victorious eight times.  However, since 2018 the Eagles have started a winning streak and this game is now the fourth straight victory over Azusa Pacific.

"Very proud of the team performance today," said Coach Chris Gould. "These girls fought for each other and earned it together."

The first half seemed like there was not going to be a goal scored by either team.  Then Molly Melanson stepped up and scored a goal with just a few minutes left in the half.  Danni Barton was awarded the assist as she got the ball to Melanson and set her up perfectly to score.  Now that the Eagles had the lead, they were focused on keeping it in the second half.

The women's soccer team put up a strong fight against APU and kept them from scoring the entire game.

"The defense started from our forwards," stated center back Melanson.  "They worked really hard pressing the ball making the back line's job a lot easier and our midfield did a great job of not letting them through. It was awesome to score but I'm more proud that we didn't give up a goal."

In fact, the Cougars only took eight shots with just three of them being on goal.  The Eagles worked together to earn a shutout and keep the win streak against Azusa as well as their win streak in conference alive.  Marianna Maldonado added to the game by scoring a goal with ten minutes left assisted by Analisa Gjonovich.  With a 2-0 victory the Green and Gold are looking forward to being back on Eagles Field for their next game.

The Eagles face off with Chaminade on Saturday, Oct 26 at 1:00 p.m. For the full CUI women's soccer schedule, click here.
