IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team maneuvered its way past Holy Names University on Friday night, sweeping the match and also the season series with solid all-around play.
CUI received key contributions from
Jaclyn Brown and setter
Brianna Latigue who each collected double-doubles. Brown led the Eagles with 11 kills and 16 digs while also hitting .318 on the night. Latigue did her part with a team-high 22 assists to go with her 10 digs and three aces.
Sophomores
Jordan Mineer and
Hannah Tostado combined for 11 of CUI's 14 blocks and were difference-makers at the net. Tostado had five kills and hit .556 on nine swings as well. The dynamic duo racked up nine of their blocks in the first set, which CUI took 25-19.
"I think with us setting up good blocks it really helped our defense to be in a good spot so it really helped us be fluid and gain momentum," said Mineer who also helped the cause with seven kills. "I think we really focused on playing with confidence coming off a losing streak. We were like: We're doing this."
The Eagles kept their foot on the gas pedal by taking the second set 25-20. A back-and-forth battle in the third ultimately swung to the home team down the stretch 25-19 thanks to a number of contributions.
"We had a solid effort by everyone," said CUI head coach
Paula Weishoff. "Jac led the team with kills and our middle attack was effective hitting .500."
Kailyn Case handed out 12 assists and an ace while senior libero
Julia DenBoer added 13 digs.
Riley Gill also tallied six kills and nine digs and senior
Kylie Breitenwischer placed two timely kills.
The Eagles improved to 10-8 overall and 4-6 in conference play after playing just their third home game of the year. In a weird scheduling quirk, the majority of their contests thus far have been on the road or at a neutral venue against non-conference opponents.
"We've had a rough travel schedule but it was awesome being back at home," said Mineer.
The Green and Gold look to snatch their second straight win on Saturday, Oct. 19 when Academy of Art comes to town. That match will start at 3 p.m.
