CUI Forces Five Sets with ARTU

IRVINE, Calif. - After playing Holy Names less than 24 hours ago, the Eagles had a quick turn around and played against Academy of Art this afternoon. The Eagles and Urban Knights had a five set battle, where the Urban Knights came out on top, winning in five sets.

Following a 3-0 sweep from last night, the Eagles picked up right where they left off and won the first set 25-17, not allowing the Urban Knights to go on a run more than two points. Jaclyn Brown finished the set out with a five point serving run, racking up two aces and kills from Riley Gill and Jordan Mineer. Concordia hit a .364 hitting percentage in the first set, while holding Academy of Art to a .194.

The second set was a different story as the Urban Knights came out fighting, pushing the Eagles and having the score tie nine times. ARTU was able to finish out the set with a final score 21-25. In the third set, ARTU took a quick 7-12 lead over the Eagles, but a hitting error broke the four point run. Another run from the Urban Knights continued their momentum until Mineer was able to stop a six point run. The Urban Knights closed out the set not allowing the Eagles to get back in the game, 18-25.

The Eagles knew they needed to win the fourth set in order to force a fifth and get a win. Even though the set was tied a few times, Concordia came out unstoppable hitting a .457 and had only one hitting error in the set. CUI closed out the set with a score 25-19, forcing a fifth set.

The fifth and final set was a contest between the teams as the score was tied eight times and the lead changed four. A kill from Hannah Tostado gave the Eagles a 9-8 lead but the Urban Knights went on a five point run, taking the set and match with a final score 11-15.

Gill had another double-double on the night with 15 kills and 14 digs, while both middle blockers, Tostado and Mackenzie Jensen had 11 kills and nine combined blocks. Mineer had ten kills and three blocks and Julia DenBoer was solid in the back row scooping up 25 digs. Brianna Latigue dished out 39 assists with Kailyn Case at 14.

The Eagles will head out on another road trip to Dominican on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. and will play the following day, Saturday October 26 against Notre Dame de Namur at 3 p.m.
