SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Concordia women's volleyball team took its final NorCal road trip this week, facing Dominican on Friday night. It was a battle in the Conlan Center, but the Eagles got by the Penguins in four sets, winning 19-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18.
Â
"We were a little show to start but then we picked up the momentum in the next three," said head coach
Paula Weishoff about the win. "Our passing settled down and then the offense started to click."
Â
Jaclyn Brown set the pace for the Eagles, putting down a career-best 20 kills. Following behind was
Riley Gill with 13 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season.
Brianna Latigue took charge of the offense later in the match and collected a double-double of her own with 42 assists and 13 digs. In the backrow,
Julia DenBoer anchored the defense with 19 digs.
Â
In set one, Concordia collected three kills apiece from Brown and Gill, but it was not enough. Dominican had a hot-hand to start the match, hitting .407 in the set.
Â
Despite a setback in the first, the Eagles turned the tables around in set two, hitting .355 led by Latigue who ran a 5-1 offense for the remainder of the match. With the new system, it allowed freshman
Cassidy Gelacio to be inserted in the back court, where she had a career-high 11 digs. Â
Â
Both teams were neck-and-neck to start the third, but four-straight points for the Green and Gold gave them a 14-9 lead.
Maddie Adams was inserted to serve and collected her first career ace as an Eagle to help get her team ahead 18-11. Back-to-back Penguin errors and a kill from Brown would then end the set at 25-16.
Â
Senior
Kylie Breitenwischer got CUI started in the fourth with one of her eight kills on the night and four points from Gill helped put the Eagles up 11-3. Despite Dominican creeping back into the set, Concordia used a 6-2 run to gain separation and then a hitting error from the Penguins sealed the victory for the Green and Gold.
