Concordia Survives Five Set Duel with Biola

IRVINE, Calif. – In front of an energized crowd on Code Yellow night, Concordia University Irvine rallied to stun their rivals from Biola for a 3-2 victory. CUI improved to 13-9 overall and 7-7 in PacWest play.

CUI fell behind 2-1 but was able to get back on track by winning the fourth and fifth sets. CUI has now won three straight games after completing the season sweep of Biola.

Jaclyn Brown posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs, while Hannah Tostado and PacWest Freshman of the Week Mackenzie Jensen supplied six blocks apiece on defense. Brianna Latigue led the Green and Gold with 35 assists while Kailyn Case added 18 helpers.

Biola survived a close encounter in the first set, escaping 26-24. Brown and Jensen led CUI with four kills apiece. Senior Julia DenBoer was active as well, collecting seven digs to lead the Green and Gold.

Concordia captured the second set 25-20 behind a strong performance by Brown. Jensen and Jordan Mineer O'Neal each added multiple kills to the cause to help the home team even the match 1-1. Mineer would finish the night with 14 kills.

Biola snuck by with a 27-25 win in the third but CUI would regroup. Sophomore Patience O'Neal made her presence felt in the fourth set to the delight of the home crowd with a block to put CUI up 20-14. After Biola rattled off a couple points, Cambria Fernandez joined the fray and placed a kill down the left side to make it 23-18 CUI. The Green and Gold pulled away 25-18 to force a deciding fifth set.

Brown bounced a kill off two Biola Eagles to put CUI up 3-1 early in the fifth set. A few rallies later, Jensen smashed another kill to make it 5-3 CUI.

After the two teams switched sides halfway through the set, Tostado helped give Concordia a little bit of a cushion by placing a kill on the left side.

A few timeouts later, Concordia would cement the win 15-9 down the stretch. Maddie Adams had an ace up her sleeve for the final point to provide the exclamation point and give CUI the 3-2 victory.

"They're always such a good team and it's always a battle there," admitted DenBoer. "It's a big win."

Concordia leads the PacWest Conference in blocks this season and that theme held true on Friday evening.

"Our middles just keep excelling," said CUI head coach Paula Weishoff. "They had a game plan against our middles so we didn't set them as much as we have in the past and Jordan and Patience helped alleviate that stress on the outside."

The home crowd was decked out in Code Yellow t-shirts for the big night which was sponsored by the Habit Burger Grill.

"It's always fun with that type of crowd and having the support means the world to us," added DenBoer.

"It was amazing. It was an electric atmosphere," said Weishoff.
