SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Looking to avenge Point Loma after a three-set loss in mid-September, Concordia fell short in its redemption match, going the distance by way of a five-set battle in Golden Gymnasium.
Five Eagles were in double-figure in points for the night, led by
Jaclyn Brown with 12 kills and
Hannah Tostado with eight kills and blocks respectively.
Jordan Mineer had nine kills and five blocks,
Patience O'Neal put down 12 kills, and
Riley Gill collected 10 kills of her own.
Julia DenBoer had her sixth match with 20 or more digs with a team-high 21.
Kailyn Case, Brown, and Gill each had double-digit digs to give them double-doubles.
Brianna Latigue had a team-best 27 assists to go along with Case's 17.
It was a battle in the first set, with the set being as close as it could be, with multiple ties and lead changes. The Sea Lions were the first to earn set point at 23-24, but the Eagles turned it around, winning off of three-straight kills from O'Neal, who had a match-high eight in that set alone.
After yet another close start, Point Loma eventually began to gain separation with a 22-13 lead. Concordia clawed its way back, going on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 24-21. Gill improved her game in the second, putting down four kills and an ace while Mineer had two blocks.
With the third set tied at 15s, CUI pulled away with two O'Neal kills and one from Gill to force a PLNU timeout. The Sea Lions inched its way back in it but kills from Mineer and Tostado closed out the set 25-22.
Point Loma got out to a hot start and never looked back to take set four 25-14. Concordia immediately responded with a 4-1 run to begin the fifth. Strong service pressure from the Sea Lions reversed the script in their favor, with a 13-6 lead. CUI scored three-straight in its last push to the end but PLNU sealed the deal with a kill.
Next: Concordia returns home for six of its final seven matches starting on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. with the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds coming into town.
