CUI Spoils HPU's Plans

Tostado Leads Block Party Against Sharks

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team continued its hot streak and moved to 3-0 on its four-game homestand by dispatching Hawai'i Pacific 3-1 on Thursday.

CUI improved to 6-1 in its last seven games overall and is now 10-8 in the PacWest Conference.

Jordan Mineer led the offense with a career-high 16 kills and hit .306 while Riley Gill added 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore setter Brianna Latigue handed out 30 assists while Kailyn Case helped the cause with 16 helpers. Libero Julia Denboer contributed a team-high 26 digs as well.

After racking up nine blocks in CUI's five-set victory over Chaminade on Wednesday, Hannah Tostado collected nine more blocks against the Sharks, moving into seventh place in the record books for total blocks in a single season. She passed Katrina Jeffrey (124), Bailey Schade (122) and Sara Whitehouse (121) and has a chance to move into sixth on the list in the category before the end of this season.

"We just want to do it for each other, for our teammates and for our coaches and we just want to show people what we are capable of doing," said Tostado. "We're always together, we pick each other up and we're communicating very well. I'm just so proud of my team."

Tostado posted a great all-around game with 10 kills, five digs and a .444 hitting percentage to go with those eight blocks. Tostado had previously already worked her way into the top ten for most block assists in a single season earlier this fall. She leads the entire PacWest Conference with 127 total blocks this season.

"Hannah's doing a great job in the middle and we're just kind of finding our groove," said CUI head coach Paula Weishoff.

In the opening set, it was a seesaw battle. Three-time PacWest Freshman of the Week Mackenzie Jensen and Patience O'Neal combined for a statement block to knot the game at 7-7 in the early going.

HPU briefly created some distance but after both teams used their timeouts, it was tied at 22-22.

A few points later, a solid swing by O'Neal resulted in a kill that made it 25-24 CUI. Jaclyn Brown stepped up to serve and the return by the Sharks ultimately went wide, handing the Eagles a 26-24 win to go up 1-0.  Jordan Mineer led the charge with eight kills while fellow sophomore Brianna Latigue handed out 10 assists.

HPU came out strong in the second set, rolling out to a 3-1 lead after CUI earned the initial point. Back-to-back kills by Brown and Riley Gill helped CUI draw even at 6-6. But the Sharks turned the tide and sunk their teeth into a 25-18 win to tie the match at one apiece.

In the third, the visitors again jumped out in front, amassing a 5-1 advantage. But CUI righted the ship and hit .310 to secure a 25-21 victory and move ahead 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Sharks tried valiantly to force a fifth, but the CUI defense would have none of it. With Tostado, Mineer and Jensen patrolling the net, the Sharks were held to a paltry .025 hitting percentage in the fourth. CUI rode its defense and Latigue and Case set up the attack to help CUI pull away 25-20 to cement the victory.

"We knew it was going to be a grind with scrappy teams this week and we've been just finding ways to win," added Weishoff. "Each match is a little bit different. (Thursday) we were setting our right sides and last night (against Chaminade) we were setting our outsides and hitting the line."

CUI is back in action this Saturday, Nov. 16 when Hawai'i Hilo comes to town. That match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. as part of the "Blackout" promotion on campus. Fans are encouraged to wear black Saturday to support both the Eagles volleyball squad as well as the CUI men's basketball team, which will host Seattle Pacific as part of the Aramark GNAC/PacWest Challenge directly after the volleyball game.
