Four Eagles Earn All-PacWest Conference Selections

Irvine, CALIF.- The second-place finishing CUI men's soccer team ended its season on a roll as a unit and picked up four All-PacWest Conference selections along the way.

First Team All-PacWest: Michael Oakson

Oakson was a force on defense the entire season helping the Eagles and the backline of the defense earn four shutouts in their last five games. He logged a team high 1544 minutes, playing in every minute of every game on the season and was one of two players to start and play in every match. Although the 6'6 junior is known for his leadership and ability to change the game on defense, Oakson had two goals and four assists on the year and served as an undeniable threat on corner kicks, and free kicks near the net.

"I feel incredibly proud and blessed to represent CUI with this honor," said Oakson. "I want to thank my teammates, family, and coaching staff for supporting me, without their support I would not be capable of earning this award. As honored as I am to receive this, it only motivates me to continue to develop and work harder to meet our team goal of winning the PacWest and qualifying for the NCAA tournament next season."

Second Team All-PacWest: Willy Ospina

Ospina started 16-of-17 games for the Green and Gold and served to be a staple on the team as someone that can be relied on. Whether he was stopping the opposing team from getting in scoring position or creating opportunities for his teammates, you could count on him to make a play. He logged 1466 minutes on the year which was good enough to be second on the team. He earned two assists and one goal on the year. His lone goal may have been the most memorable for the seniors, it was the game-winning score against Point Loma on the team's "Senior Day." This is the second straight year that Ospina has earned Second Team All-PacWest honors and he will look to continue his hard work heading into next season.

Third Team All-PacWest: Caley Powers & Luke Ryan

This pair of scorers were pivotal in the success of the Eagle squad. Both Powers and Ryan earned a shot on goal percentage of over 51% on the year. Powers led the team with 37 attempts at the net and a team high 21 points, scoring eight goals and assisting on five more. Powers had game-winning goals against both Fresno Pacific and Hawaii Pacific. While Powers was a marksman in his own right, Ryan was as well. Ryan was widely known for his famous box out around the net to create space and shoot. Ryan had 21 attempts at goal and scored the team's second best 13 total points with six goals and one assist. Ryan also had two game-winning goals, one against Notre Dame de Namur and one in the match against Hawai'i Hilo.

"This season went great," said Powers. "I feel like we improved as a team every game and got better every day. It was great to have my personal best season in my last one, and it was also great to have helped the team finish the way we did."

The Eagles men's soccer team finished the season winning five of their last six matches and will look to build on that momentum heading into next year.
