IRVINE, Calif. -
Andre Green tied his career-high with 28 points Thursday evening as Concordia University Irvine emerged with its fourth straight win by a final score of 99-79 over Fresno Pacific.
Joining Green in double figures was
Cameron English who poured in a season-best 18 points and six rebounds.
Kayle Knuckles added 16 points while
Jalen Sanders also filled out the box score with an all-around effort as he tallied 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
"We were really excited to play," said Sanders. "We had a week off in between and Andre had a great game and gave us a lot of energy."
Green was the catalyst in the first half and did not let up at any point in the contest. He collected 17 of his 28 points before intermission and finished a game-best +24 on the night. Ironically, his 28 points were the most Green has scored in a NCAA DII basketball game since February 2018, when he was an undergraduate at Holy Names and played for the Hawks against Concordia.
"I was just taking open shots and my teammates were given me pretty passes," said Green. "I was just coming off picks and (Fresno) was backing up so I was shooting."
Green also knocked down 11 of his 17 field goal attempts and went 6-for-9 from three-point land.
"It fires everybody up," added Knuckles, when asked about Green's impressive shooting performance. "We all know what he can do and we have a lot of guys that can do that on any given night."
Green was also very active defensively, coming up with two of CUI's 16 steals. Perhaps the most impressive statistic of the evening was that 11 different Eagles collected at least one steal.
"I think late in the game we got a bunch of stops in a row to pull away and we were passing the ball well, inside out, putting good shots up and we put it all together," said Knuckles.
"We were getting stops on defense and coming at them from every single angle so it was (a) big time (effort) by everybody," added Green.
The Eagles asserted themselves early by grabbing a 12-4 advantage to open the contest. CUI extended the lead to 27-12 after Sanders fed English on a breakaway opportunity for a rim-rattling dunk.
English played his best game of the season, shooting a sizzling 6-for-7 from the floor and he and Sanders were CUI's leading rebounders.
"Cam played really, really hard. He had great energy, had a great effort tonight and that really helped us," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "Our guys really played together as a team and you saw a lot of guys step up."
In addition to forcing 22 FPU turnovers, the Eagles shared the ball well as they totaled 23 assists.
The Eagles will host Green's former squad - Holy Names University – in their next PacWest Conference matchup on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. following the women's contest which is slated to start at noon.
