IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine Eagles racked up 13 hits and led for the majority of Tuesday's non-conference tilt before a late rally turned the tide and gave visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills a 5-4 victory.
Kai Gomez's RBI base knock in the top of the ninth helped the Toros escape with the win after an impressive start by the CUI offense.
The early CUI scoring barrage came in the bottom of the first inning as the Eagles pounced on the Toros with four quick runs after falling behind briefly 1-0.
Haloa Dudoit led off with a bunt single and then after
Bailey Collins sacrificed him over to second,
PacWest Player of the Week Cooper Moore plated Dudoit with a RBI single to tie the game. After
Matt Lautz doubled down the left field line,
Shane Hersh knocked in Moore with a RBI single. The Eagles added to the lead when
Calvin Schonebaum put the ball in play and two more runs scored after his single and a throwing error. The Eagles finished the first frame with a 4-1 lead after collecting six hits.
Schonebaum also started the day on the mound and went three innings for CUI while allowing only one earned run on three hits. He stayed in the game as the designated hitter and finished with two hits at the plate as well.
Junior
Ren Martin and senior
Morgan Brannock each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Nick Manago also struck out two batters in the eighth after the Toros scraped together a run to tie the ball game at 4-4. That set the stage for Gomez's clutch hit in the ninth.
Hersh doubled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to put the potential-game tying run in scoring position but
Dominic Castro's lofted fly ball to the outfield was caught by Toros left fielder Justin Morris to end the contest.
"Collectively we didn't compete pitch to pitch for however many pitches we got to play today," said head coach
Joe Turgeon. "We weren't prepared to do what it takes to be successful from the time we got to the park and that's on me."
Moore went 2-for-5 at the plate on Tuesday and is now hitting .500 (7-for-14) in his last four starts.
Alex DiMascio, Dudoit, Lautz and Hersh joined Moore and Schonebaum with two hits apiece.
The Concordia baseball team returns to action next Friday. Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. against PacWest rival Point Loma. The Eagles will host the Sea Lions for a doubleheader that afternoon in Irvine in a pair of non-conference games before visiting Point Loma at their place the following afternoon.
