IRVINE, Calif. — Concordia Baseball split with Point Loma for a non-conference tilt at Eagles Field on Friday. The Sea Lions took game one with a final score of 7-3, but Concordia battled back in the second game. The Eagles ran away with it in the eighth inning, courtesy of a three-run home run by Jair Donovan.
Game One:
Shane Hersh lead the CUI going 2-for-3 with an RBI double, RBI single and a walk. Hersh started a rally early in the second inning with an double to left field to score Bailey Collins. Alex DiMascio grounded out to score Hersh soon after, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Point Loma stole the lead in the fourth after a 2-run double, followed by a solo home run in the fifth.
Hersh knocked his second RBI of the night with a single in the sixth, but Concordia still trailed 4-3. A late inning two-run homer and a double put Point Loma up 7-3 after the ninth.
Andrew Stout hurled from the mound in game one, giving the Eagles 6.2 innings and striking out four Sea Lions.
Game Two:
With quicker start to the second game, the scoreboard was blank until the bottom of the third inning. Cooper Moore hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Haloa Dudoit and get a run on the board. The fourth frame remained empty for Point Loma but proved to be significant for Concordia adding two runs after an RBI single by Chris Martin III that scored both Hersh and Lautz.
The Sea Lions tied it up in the fifth with a homer to right center by Micah Pries who later singled to add another to Point Loma's score. As a designated hitter, Alex DiMascio entered the box in the sixth and smashed a home run of his own over the left field fence and put the Eagles within one run. In the same inning, Nick Grimes hit a pinch hit double to left center to score Colin Villegas and tie the game at 5.
"Going up as a pinch hitter, you're just looking for your pitch and luckily he threw it right where I was swinging," Grimes said.
The teams remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. With a 2-1 count, Donovan took a big swing and sent a rocket over the right center field wall scoring Dudoit and Carl Turner.
"I was looking for a fastball going into the at bat and was just happy to find that fastball right over the plate," Donovan said.
Donovan's homer put the Eagles up 8-5 and Carpenter Pagett entered the game from the bullpen to shut out Point Loma in the ninth and secure the win.
"Everyone was up and having a good time and thats what it takes, everyone has to have fun," Donovan said. "I have some things I'll take with me moving forward but overall it was a good day."
