Chambers Sets School-Record For Assists In Latest CUI Win

IRVINE, Calif. – On a night where their team's leading scorer set the school record for assists, the Concordia University Irvine Eagles racked up a season-high 98 points to finish off a series sweep against Hawai'i Hilo.

Brian Chambers handed out 17 dimes, with his final assist of the game coming on a late three-pointer by Austin Clarke.  It's the most assists by a CUI Eagle in 23 years, as Chambers passed the elite company of Danny Barajas and Agustin Heredia who each had 16 assists in a game for the Green and Gold back in the mid-90's.  Barajas posted 16 helpers against Fresno Pacific in 1996, while Heredia set that previous benchmark against Life Bible back in 1993.

Chambers added 13 points and seven steals and finished +15 on the evening.

"I felt like we were were able to attack the rim a lot," said Chambers.  "The more they trapped, I felt like there was always somebody open. All our bigs made it easy with how hard they rolled right to the basket."

"Brian was never supposed to have to play this many minutes at the point and he's done a phenomenal job stepping into that role when some others guys have been out," added CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "It's really made him even more of a complete player and just the best all-around player you could ever get."

The Eagles (19-8, 15-3 PacWest) also received huge games from juniors Robert Taylor and Cameron English.  Taylor scored a career-high 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the floor.  He also finished a game-best +23 and sank all eight of his free throw attempts.

English was also the benefactor of a number of nifty passes from Chambers.  English shot 9-of-10 from the field and tied his career-high with 20 points. The Medford, Ore. native also totaled 20 points last season in a win over Life Pacific.

"Overall, we did a really good job of getting to the rim and scoring the ball," added Ammann. "They are a hard team to beat. They were probably a little tired from that hard-fought win on Thursday (over Point Loma) and we were able to get a lot of transition baskets."

The Vulcans (11-11, 9-9 PacWest) were led by Larry Bush who scored 26 points.

Redshirt freshman Kayle Knuckles added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Eagles.  Kyle Gray added nine points and Tyler Lacour scored all of his 10 points in the first half.  Lacour sank two deep threes to the delight of the home fans, who wore a mix of gray "6th man" and "Code Yellow" t-shirts as a part of the night's promotions.

The Eagles improved to 6-1 in their last seven outings and preserved their perfect home record against PacWest Conference opponents.  The Green and Gold are 8-0 at home this year in league play and 9-1 overall.

Concordia will play four games in eight days and returns to the floor right away on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. against Hawai'i Pacific. Monday night's game will be the second part of a doubleheader with the Sharks as the women's teams face off at 5:30 p.m. that same evening.

Note: A prior version of this story and the box score incorrectly stated that Brian Chambers tied the CUI school-record with 16 assists. We apologize for the mistake and have corrected it. Thank you for your understanding and we appreciate your support of CUI Athletics.
