CUI Water Polo Tops D1 Opponent With Second Half Comeback

IRVINE, Calif. – Defeating a Division I school in comeback fashion, the Concordia University Irvine women's water polo team secured its ninth victory of the season Wednesday afternoon by topping Brown University by a score of 9-7.

Freshman Madison Ravelo and junior Elena Isogawa each scored three goals and added one assist to lead the CUI offense.  Shannon Graham also net two scores and handed out an assist to help the cause.

Dailynn Santoro's goal in the third quarter tied the game at 3-3 after the Eagles trailed by a point at halftime. A key play in the contest came later in the third quarter, when Hanna Jordan fed Ravelo across the pool and led to one of Ravelo's two goals in the period.

CUI outscored the Bears 5-1 in the third, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 7-4 advantage as both teams approached the final quarter. Graham and Isogawa found the back of the net for valuable insurance goals in the fourth and those two scores wound up being the difference as the Bears made one last push down the stretch.  Ultimately, Concordia held on to its lead to put the finishing touches on a gutsy effort.

"We're a D2 school and to beat a D1 school and come back and win (the way we did), we were all pumped and really excited," added Ravelo.

"We started off down by two goals and we came back and held it the whole game," said Graham.  "It was emotionally tough but we were able to get the win and that's all that matters."

Senior goalie Ariana Olmos added ten saves between the pipes to lead the Concordia defense.

"We held them to seven goals and when we do that, we're going to put our team in great position to win and we did that today," said CUI head coach Dreason Barry.

CUI will host its Code Yellow match this Friday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. against Santa Clara at Woollett Aquatics Center.
