IRVINE, Calif. — Concordia Baseball hosted No. 14 Azusa Pacific at Eagles Field on Thursday for the first of a four game PacWest series. After taking a hefty lead in the first three innings, the Eagles dropped the game 13-8.
Jair Donovan leads Concordia with 33 RBI's and nine home runs in the 2019 season. Matt Lautz went 4-for-5 on the day with three singles and a triple with two RBIs. Cooper Moore went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.
Haloa Dudoit lead off the Eagles first inning with an infield base hit. Jair Donovan knocked an RBI double to score Dudoit. Then, Matt Lautz crushed a triple to score Donovan and Tony Garcia III grounded out to the second baseman and scored Lautz. Concordia lead APU 3-0 after one.
Cougars put pressure in the top of the third inning with one run scored. Chris Martin made a back handed catch and twisted around to fire to first and shorten the inning.
CUI put up another three run inning in the third. Nick Grimes started the surge with a single to left field. Donovan entered the box and crushed the ball over the right field fence to earn two RBIs. Soon after, Lautz bunted for a base hit and scored on a base hit by Moore. Eagles lead 6-1 after three innings.
In the fourth inning, Azusa Pacific broke the game open. The cougars scored six runs in one frame and added six more in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
Brett Vansant threw for six innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs.
"Going into tomorrow, we just need to take it one pitch at a time and not worry about who we're playing and just play baseball." Moore said. "We just want to play our game and not try to do too much, just try and do what we do."
